Industrial Automation & Operational Technology is a leading field that Techniche operate in. We have had a presence in this market for almost 15 years at all levels including vendors, systems integrators and end users. A common theme across the this specialism, similar to the wider engineering sector is scarcity of entry level and emerging talent. So receiving a brief from one of our largest Automation clients for a junior engineer was initially quite daunting!

However, what set this client apart from the rest and ultimately resulted in the placement of an ambitious candidate was the approach to foundation engineering skills that was able to be considered in the job specification.

So many companies want all boxes ticked, or an engineer to start with all the skills already in hand and no requirement for development or training. This client however was open to all types of background and wanted to be able to mould someone to the position offering solid development and a paved pathway to increase their ability.

For this vacancy we presented a number of candidates who had worked in maintenance engineering where they had gained excellent hands on foundation skills with electrical, controls and instrumentation technologies.

The pool of talent in maintenance is vast, but it is rare for systems integrators and vendors to tap into this area due to the development needed.

Following a number of positive interviews our client was left with a difficult decision of which candidate to select. So in this instance they actually offered and hired 2 engineers who start in February 2020.
